π Thor! π Moms! π Birds!
"What?! No. Wait. We can't stop here.... this is bat country." - guess which movie.
what's in theaters...
Welcome to the first edition of what's in theaters... where we tell you, uh, what's in theaters.
It's...Β one email a week that tells you what you need to know about the movies coming out this weekend, next weekend and beyond in a simple straightforward manner (with a little bit of fun tucked in).
We'll send it...Β every Wednesday afternoon.
We are... people who've worked in tech and the movie industry.
The movies we'll be including are...Β all major (see: national) releases, and some of the most notable "platform" or NY/LA type movies.
We know trailers...Β are sometimes better than the actual movies (true). And we'll have all the new ones released each week - scroll down to view.
But! But! But! What about... movies from Netflix and Amazon? We feel you, but did you see the name of this thing? For real, we're just starting with theaters and seeing how that goes.Β More subscriptions, maybe more movies.Β
Uuuuhhh... for those of you thinking "y'all heard of Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, Fandango, or say, I don't know, THE ENTIRE INTERNET?!" we get it.Β
However.
We still felt like no one presents this information in the way we want (simple and clean) and the method we want (pushed).
You'll also get a little writing up here each week - mostly about movies (keyword: mostly). Β
Feel free to send us feedback or questions.
That's it for now - let's get to...
...this weekend.
THOR: RAGNAROK
It's...Β the third Thor movie in the ever popular Marvel universe. This film focuses on Thor and Hulk fighting... each other? Yup. Oh, AND an evil baddy named Hela played by Cate Blanchett (<--awesome). More comedic tone this time too due to a new (also awesome) director. Ooh! Jeff Goldblum being Jeff Goldblum too!
Β
Watch...Β Teaser Trailer - Full Trailer
Reviews... are very solid.Β 96% of reviewers recommend it via Rotten Tomatoes, with much of the focus being on the more fun, less Shakespearean tone, e.g. EW said "Ragnarok is basically a Joke Delivery System - and on that score, it works. The movie is fun."
Our take...Β we loved the director's other recent film, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and the trailers have been great. Plus, short hair Thor > long hair Thor. In.Β

A BAD MOMS CHRISTMAS
It's...Β moms (Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell & Kathryn Hahn specifically) being "bad" around Xmas, but you knew that. The twist is that this time THEIR moms get involved. So it's like double moms, except there are six moms... so it's like sexteple moms.Β Imagine there will be ball jokes, or three.
Watch...Β "Red Band" Teaser - "Red Band" Full Trailer (read: Red Band = swear words, mostly)
Reviews... aren't out yet. Easy to assume the studio thinks reviewers won't like it (fair considering the first saw 58% recommendation on RT).Β But did you like the first? If so, then maybe why not?
Our take...Β never saw the first one, but looked fun and like the cast lots (especially Kathryn Hahn). Too samey though? Hm. Maybe. But probably not.
Note... this is in theaters TODAY.

LADY BIRD
It's...Β the first film written and directed byΒ Greta Gerwig, the prolific "indie" actress. A comedy where a strong willed teenager (Soairse Ronan - Brooklyn) matches up against her also strong willed mom (Laurie Metcalf - Roseanne) and the rest of the world. Being released by A24 who has an excellent track record in the past few years.Β
Watch...Β The Trailer
Reviews... are fantastic. It's sitting perfect at 100% RT recomended right nowΒ - and the recs are emphatic.Β The New Yorker says "As writer and director, Greta Gerwig infuses this comedic coming-of-age drama with verbal virtuosity, gestural idiosyncrasy, and emotional vitality."
Note... that it's only playing in limited theaters (NY/LA).
Our take...Β In. Definitely In.
