Pixar x ( š + šø + š) = ā¤
WHICH MOVIE?Ā "Klaatu Barada N... necktie... nectar... nickel... noodle. It's an "n" word, it's definitely an "n" word..." (answer at bottom)
What's In Theaters
Whelp, it's that time of year when the people who normally huff and puff when you ask them if they want to see a flick, "Ugh, I would, but there are never any good films out. Like eeeever." finally pipe down.
Only to be replaced by the "GAWD, why are all the movies so serious now? Can't we getĀ one movie where someone gets hit right in the balls?" folks.Ā
It's also that time of year when you get to ignore both of them and enjoy some real high quality cinema.
Btw, if this email gets cut off, go here and click "the most recent edition."
Let's get to...
Ā
This Weekend
Coco
Ā
WHAT'S THE DEAL
It's the new Pixar movie. For some (including us), that's enough.
But if you need more... A boy Miguel defies his family by becoming a musician, but as a consequence ends up in the Land of the Dead <--- which is apparently brighter, both in tone and visual splendor, than the fluorescent lights of a Walmart at exactly 3:27 am.
Side note: If you're an adult going without children, we're not advocating getting high and going to see this movie, but were not not advocating that.
Ā
REVIEWS
Apparently good enough that it'll make you forget (albeit briefly) that the guy who founded Pixar is evenĀ more touchy feely than his movies.
LA TimesĀ noted, "The script's ghoulish touchesĀ and mordant flashes of wit turn out to be its most disarming qualities. "
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 96%
ARE WE GONNA GO?
Ā
Would Woody walk through a burning forest full of termites and active circular saws to help Andy if he was in trouble?
Darn tootin!

The Man Who Invented Christmas
AKA
"some Pagan dude"
WHAT'S THE DEALĀ
Dan StevensĀ (Downton Abbey & Beauty and the Beast)Ā as Charles Dickens and how he came up with Mr. Humbug himself - Tiny Tim too! Part fantasticalĀ comedy, part drama, all heartfelt.Ā
While intrigued, we more stoked for the sequel, The Man Who Invented the REAL Christmas. It'll be a real doozy of a story about a wino author who inspired us to cherish boatloads of consumerism, family infighting and six weeks of "where's the nearest razor so I can slit my wrists?" music. Juuuust kidding (kinda).Ā
NOTE: Opens TODAY and in limited (NY/LA) release. Should expand in subsequent weekends.
REVIEWS
Saying it's a story and style you may know, but done well.Ā
With some real solid performances from Stevens and Christopher Plummer (as Scrooge).
Rotten Tomatoes Score:Ā 79%
ARE WE GONNA GO?
Ā
Do we have to babysit a couple a kids? If not, then probably not.Ā But not out of any malice, just not quiiite motivated enough (Dan Stevens rox though).

Darkest Hour
AKA
"ThatĀ hour after you shoulda been asleepĀ three hours ago"
WHAT'S THE DEALĀ
Gary Oldman (CommissionerĀ Gordon in Dark Knight trilogy) dons the makeup and apparently kills it as Winston Churchill holdin' down England in its stand against them hated Nazis.
Not much more to say than, if you like this kind of movie, you should probably see this movie
NOTE: Opens TODAY and in limited (NY/LA) release. Should expand in subsequent weekends.

All about that (likely) Oscar nominated performance.Ā
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 88%
ARE WE GONNA GO?
Ā
Probably not in theaters, but might catch it come screener time to help usĀ dominateĀ our Oscar pool (that asshole Frank is going DOWN).

WHAT'S THE DEAL
Armie Hammer (twins in Social Network) plays the older man in a "first love" story set in 1983 Italy (don't worry, it's in English).Ā
While the story happens to be about a same sex affair, the film is getting more attentionĀ for it's depiction of the innocence, and hardship, that comes with discovering your first desire.Ā
NOTE: In limited (NY/LA) release. Should expand in subsequent weekends.
REVIEWS
Calling it a real special movie.
"The way it explores at length the sweet and sour aspects of first love is worth savoring." USA Today

WHAT'S THE DEALĀ
Ā
Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) wrote and directed this film about a "creature" discovered by the US government in the 1950's who is to be killed, but saved by a mute janitor. They may fall in love too.
ItĀ sounds as exotic as it doesĀ ambitious.Ā And the early word is extremely positive.
