The Weekend of the Poutine Movies.
GUESS THE QUOTE!
(answer at bottom of the email)
"Slippery little suckers..."
"It happens aaall the time."
What's In Theaters
Ya know, lots of movies are like poutine.
......?
Yes, poutine. That adorable French Canadian dish where you combine cheese curds, french fries and gravy for tastebud party time.
It's a three item recipe that you might think would make you want to throw up, and when combined, looks like throw up.
But ah, when you take a bite, it's super deliciousness all up in your grill garage.
Two of this weekend's movies, The Disaster Artist and The Shape of Water, are apparently just like poutine - odd in theory, tasty in action.
The third?
Apparently it's just cheese ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Btw, if this email gets cut off, to view it fully on the web.
NOTE: Darkest Hour, Call Me By Your Name, Lady Bird are expanding over the coming weeks, so keep checking if they weren't at your local theater last weekend.
Ok, let's get to...
This Weekend
The Shape of Water
AKA
"the form H2O takes as it occupies the volume of the object wherein it currently resides"
R / 1 hr 59 mins
WHAT'S THE DEAL
It's Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth and Pacific Rim dude) gettin' weird again.
This time he wrote and directed a film about a "creature" discovered by the US government in the 1960's who is to be killed, but saved by a mute janitor. They maaaay fall in love too.
It sounds as exotic as it does ambitious.
If you're dubious, just watch the trailer.
NOTE: limited (NY/LA) release. Will expand in subsequent weekends.
REVIEWS
Good enough that when you explain the premise to your partner and they go "da fuq??" you can say, "but it's one of the best reviewed movies of the year!"
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 98%

ARE WE GONNA GO?
Wetsuit, on!

That means we're in.

The Disaster Artist
AKA
"you talking to your crush"
R / 1 hr 38 mins
WHAT'S THE DEAL
Imagine this.
You're a terrible actor, but you don't know it.
You have a lot of money, but no one knows how you got it.
You make a real life movie with said (horrible) acting skills and ($6 million) dollar bills, but no one comes to see it.
Now imagine your movie goes on to be known as "the worst movie ever made," but also goes on to become a cult classic in the vein of Rocky Horror Picture Show (i.e. throwing things, dressing up etc.).
Theeeen imagine there's a movie made about you and your movie - and you're being played by James Franco (for which he is getting early Oscar talk).
The Disaster Artist is that movie.
NOTE: limited (NY/LA) release. Should expand in subsequent weekends.
REVIEWS
In a fun turn of events, a movie about one of the worst movies ever made is apparently one of the best movies of the year.

ARE WE GONNA GO?
Oh, hi Mark...
Look, we'll be honest, we haven't seem The Room, but living in LA we've known about, so we're curious about this one.

"that lesser known Oasis song"
PG-13 / 1 hrs 41 mins
WHAT'S THE DEAL
Woody Allen in his 17th "I ain't dead yet!" reminder.
Bright backdrop of Coney Island in 1950's set stage for Justin Timberlake and Kate Winslet to get caught up in d.r.a.m.a. drama. Gangsters, betrayal, actors and... lifeguards?
NOTE: limited (NY/LA) release. Should expand in subsequent weekends.
REVIEWS
Whether they're for or against, the reviews aren't that adamant and overall mixed.
Good actors involved, so there's that.
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 46%

ARE WE GONNA GO?

WHAT'S THE DEAL
Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones milk the old right out of this one with a comedy about two fogeys fighting for position in a "senior folks" community. Rene Russo stars as well.
Imagine there'll be lots of low hanging fruit jokes about, well, low hanging fruit.
