"It is hard God damn work,
making something this pretty look like a chump!"
Uncle Drew comes out this weekend. It's an ad turned into a movie. If it does well, we fully expect there to be copy cats.
If that's the case, we hope they give Mr. Whipple his fair shot at glory. We're thinking gritty drama w/ win at all costs stakes, a dusting of hopeful redemption and a smattering of communist subterfuge.

DAY OF THE SOLDADO
AKA
"the movie that's more fun to watch
than to pronounce for gringos"
R / 2 hrs 2 mins
Action-Thriller / Sony
WHAT'S THE DEAL
It's a somewhat confusing continuation if you've seen the first, and even if you haven't, cuz the original wasn't exactly a banger at the box office - it was just really really good, in large part thx to Emily Blunt and direction by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) - neither of whom are back for this one.
What we do have is the same writer (also wrote Hell or High Water, Wind River) brosefs Benicio Del Toro (the titular Soldado) and Josh Brolin, taking their attack on the Mexican drug cartels to WDGAF levels, which gives us an even more jacked up and aggressive tone than the first.
Expect guns, violence, one liners and more guns and violence.
REVIEWS
Not as good as the first, but better than you might've expected. Even though it's about a complicated topic, doesn't seem to have a clear "message." But does is that itself a message?

OUR TAKE
We really didn't expect much, and it still seems a bit superfluous after seeing the first, but if it has a quarter of the intensity of the first, we wouldn't mind a watch.

UNCLE DREW
AKA
"drink Pepsi"
PG-13 / 1 hr 43 mins
Comedy / Lionsgate
WHAT'S THE DEAL
It's a Pepsi Youtube ad turned into a full movie, whose plot line best befits a film from the early noughties. But here we are sitting in 2018, gettin served what we deserve.
For those unaware, the catch up is that real life NBA baller Kyrie Irving plays Uncle Drew, an old dood who can still smash, and when people see it, they lose their shit.
The mustard is that he brings along his other old dood friends (hammaster himself Shaq, plus Reggie Miller, Chris Webber, Nate Robinson & Lisa Leslie) to play in a street ball tournament. Spicy.
The mayo is Nick Kroll playing the token white guy channeling his best Ben Stiller in Dodgeball.

A few trickling in, but why bother? If you're depending on reviewers to tell you whether a Pepsi ad turned into a movie is of quality, then just like... *throws up hands*

WHAT'S THE DEAL
While the plot is simple (father and daughter have their off the grid life disrupted, they try and gain it back), the emotions and many letter adjectives being used to describe this film, are not. Oscars discussion likely.
Peep the trailer, read some reviews, get to watching.

Can't do no better. Focus is on the subtle, yet affecting filmmaking and really good acting from the leads.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP
Not the Avengers. And that's apparently a good thing. Early reviews are quite good and note the comedy and lack of over seriousness.
THE FIRST PURGE
We learn the purge was actually used by the government to do really bad stuff to marginalized groups. No bueno. We also learn if people still love this stuff (it's #4 in series).

Nic Cage in full on crazy mode. But like the good kind. Early (really positive) reviews show it. Looks kinda fun cuz the director is full on too - cool/weird visuals, bonkers horror stuff & more.
