"The only thing we serve is tongue.
Do you boys like tongue?"
We have three levels of "social consciousness" in our movies this week. We'll make the scale and let you guess which movie lands where. Scale goes from sharply subversive to Ant-Man.
Crap. Think we gave one of them away.

ANT-MAN
AND THE WASP
AKA
"that movie where they better explain where the
hell Ant-Man was in the last Avengers"
PG-13 / 2 hrs 5 mins
Comedy-Action / Marvel & Disney
WHAT'S THE DEAL
Proof Marvel can make a movie based on nearly any of their characters and make bank (and a decent flick).
The second Marvel movie lead by Paul Rudd (repeat after us "love that guy") who plays a character named after your picnic nemesis, and still manages to be funny and charming. But you knew that, what might you not know?
it's not confirmed, but very likely takes place before (and during?) the most recent Avengers
this is the first Marvel movie with one of their female characters in the title
Michael Peña is back, no doubt no doubt
Michelle Pfeifer is in it too
REVIEWS
Funny, light (too light?), charming even more funny, good amount of heart
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 87%

OUR TAKE
A great move by Marvel to cut the weight of The Avengers. Looks fun, although with a "watch and forget" feel to it. That ain't all bad depending on yer mood though.

THE FIRST PURGE
AKA
"that time you got introduced to tequila"
PG-13 / 1 hr 52 mins
Horror / Universal
WHAT'S THE DEAL
Mass media product with a dash of cultural critique.
Fourth movie, first prequel, of series based around night where all crimes are turned legal for 12 hours. In origin story style we learn the big ol G.O.V. actually started committing the nastiest crimes first - and against already marginalized communities. Who are havin none of that trash, so they fight back. Don't buy tooo much into the social criticism though, this is still a fright fest first, civil discourse second(third?).
NOTE: in theaters today
REVIEWS
None yet. But first three movies saw RT scores of 38%, 56%, 53% chronologically for reference.
Rotten Tomatoes Score: TBD

OUR TAKE
The franchise has always tried for some social commentary and this looks to continue, but generally those elements act more as plot devices for a fairly straightforward (bland?) shock horror piece than committed effort. Don't imagine this'll stray too far from that.

SORRY TO
BOTHER YOU
AKA
"the four words that most often precede
the three words no thank you"
R / 1 hr 45 mins
Comedy-Satire / Annapurna
WHAT'S THE DEAL
That movie your friend who always know what's up, is gonna ask if you're down.
Cheeky, surreal social critique starring that dude from Get Out and Atlanta (as in LaKeith Stanfield) who becomes a telemarketer and gets caught up in that money chase, much to the dislike of his more activist focused gf, that girl from Creed and Thor: Ragnarok (as in Tessa Thompson).
Kinda looks like a combo of a Spike Lee flick, Get Out and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Yeah. For those friends who know what's up, written/directed by Boots Riley (for rest of us, Boots is most known as a rapper/activist).
REVIEWS
Very down, e.g. The New Yorker - "Riley dramatizes outrageously complex machinations of predatory greed and depraved misrule-and offers a passionate, joyous vision of resistance."
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 95%

OUR TAKE
Looks fresh and fun. Even if we're unsure the story will hold, we bet watching the two leads will be rad.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3:
SUMMER VACATION
The most success Adam Sandler has had in the last decade continues. Doesn't mean you should expect Pixar level of goodness (or even close), but still will work as distraction for little ones.
SKYSCRAPER
Essentially Die Hard with The Rock. So of course it's a deconstruction of the psychological manifestation of... jk, it's bigger, it's louder, it's more The Rockier.

EIGHTH GRADE
A fictional depiction of the realities, including the awkward and painful, of the title time period. Getting lauded for it's empathy and realism.

Hooters like restaurant, a manager who gives a shit, a double entendre title, a "small movie" and some really nice early reviews.
