Come, bitter poison, come, unsavory guide!

"Come on Shadow...
He was old. It was too far.
He was just too old..."
The new trailer for Vice, the Dick Cheney movie starring Christian Bale made us wonder. Who will play Trump in the movie version? Cuz you know there will be a movie version of whatever out there adjective you use to describe thems current times.

A STAR IS BORN
AKA
"lots of champagne, no supernova"
R / 2 hrs 15 mins
Drama / Warner Bros.
WHAT'S THE DEAL
It's a love story.
It's a love story that's also the Bradley Cooper show: he concepted it (technically the fourth iteration of the movie, this is a full modern set redo), he stars in it, he wrote it, he directed it, he produced it, he learned to sing/play guitar for it and he recruited Lady GaGa for it (her first big movie role).
It's a love story where there's big Hollywood scope, where there are star crossed lovers on different trajectories, where there are ruminations on fame, art and capitalism, where brothers fight and people drink way (way) too much, where the aforementioned director had delusions of grandeur but for the most part they seemed to work out. It's a lot of things to be sure. But first and foremost...
...it's a love story.
REVIEWS
Really good. Reviews keying in on just how satisfying it is in a "big Hollywood movie" kind of way.
"Like its finest antecedents, it wrings tears from its romance and thrills from a steadfast belief in old-fashioned, big-feeling cinema. That it's also a perverse fantasy about men, women, love and sacrifice makes it all the better." - Manohla Dargis, NY Times

Looks like a movie where you just need to let yourself be enveloped by all of it. Wrap us up.

VENOM
AKA
"something you should spit out instead of swallow"
PG-13 / 1 hr 52 mins
Action-Superhero / Sony
WHAT'S THE DEAL
To assure best experience, please self select as A) comic nerd B) non-comic nerd but curious C) non-comic nerd who just wants to watch a damn movie, and skip to required reading area.
A) not the Venom movie we wanted (it's PG-13 for christ's sake), see reviews
B) It's an origin story for Venom, one of the many nemeses (also one of the most popular) of Spider-Man. Venom is a symbiote who merges with humans to give them powers, but is also kinda evil. In comics it first merged with Spidey, then a guy Eddie who hated Spider-Man, hence nemesis status. However, this is NOT a Spider-Man movie, so the story has been changed. Tom Hardy plays Venom who's supposed to be an "anti-hero," but in this looks to be more of a hero "light" as he takes on evil guy with an evil corporation while also eating some (bad guy) human heads.
C) it's another superhero movie, but not connected to that Avengers stuff. It's also kind of a horror movie & stars Tom Hardy who merges with a creature that gives him powers, but is also kinda evil.
REVIEWS
Pretty awful. Hating on tone, bad characters and a need of connection to Spider-Man.

OUR TAKE
We were skeptical from the first trailer and our worst fears seem to be confirmed. A bummer cuz the Venom character is so cool... *sigh*

THE HATE YOU GIVE
AKA
"that thing that rhymes with shawarma"
PG-13 / 2 hrs 12 mins
Drama / Fox
WHAT'S THE DEAL
It'll be called a "YA movie" because it's from a teen's perspective (and based on a book that is the same), and it'll be called a "race movie," because well, it does deal with race, including the police shooting of an unarmed black kid (the lead's best friend).
But really it looks to be about a girl and her experiences splitting two worlds, dealing with love, trauma, learning how to grow and lots of other messy, complicated stuff. So ya know, a "life movie."
Fun Fact: the lead is (sorta) growed up Amandla Stenberg who played Rue in The Hunger Games.
REVIEWS
"Entertaining, enraging, and ultimately deeply moving, "The Hate U Give" is poised to be a hit, and deserves to be." - Variety
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 97%

OUR TAKE
We imagine many will have to "be in the right mood" for this movie since it deals with heavier & complicated topics, but often that mood never arises. Understandable, but a bummer because it does look good.

BAD TIMES
AT THE EL ROYALE
Big cast (Dakota Johnson, Chris Hemsworth, Jon Hamm, Jeff Bridges), and big twists - Drew Goddard who wrote and directed this also wrote the mindfuck that was Cabin in the Woods. Solid early reviews.
FIRST MAN
Next movie from Damien Chazelle who wrote/directed La La Land & Whiplash. It's a "human take" on the first moon landing with Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong. Reviews are really strong.
GOOSEBUMPS 2:
HAUNTED HALLOWEEN
For some reason this is not direct to VOD. But it should've been. No Jack Black, no other original stars and from the looks of it, no story either beyond "hey you, give us some money."
