Phrase of the Day: "Cute Aggression"
GUESS THE QUOTE
"Eddie, did you computer model your work?
No I didn't, I was too busy building it."
What recent "Oscar movies" have you seen? We've been able to check out...
The Favourite (loved it - really sharp, funny and fresh, acting is stellar)
Vice (good acting, if a bit too obvious meal for people of a certain political persuasion)
Green Book (odd way to say it, but "nice/easy" (maybe less complicated?) story about racism, some really solid acting - best reason to see)

A DOG'S WAY HOME
AKA
"a leash, the way to get a dog home is a goddamned leash people"
PG / 2 hrs 17 mins

WHAT'S THE DEAL
A recent study came out about "cute aggression," where over half of adults see things that are awwww inducing (puppies, babies etc.) and want to crush their adorable little faces into tiny adorable pieces (guilty). Apparently it's a reaction to being overloaded by the big eyes and chunky fat cheeks and is nothing to worry about as it's in no way an intention to actually cause harm. Which is great, cuz massacring puppies = wtf, really?!
Why do we bring this up (besides it being super interesting)? Well, depending on who you are, this movie will induce "cute aggression" or just straight aggression - because you either think that a dog lost from its owner befriending a mountain lion is "just the best," or that some script writer should have stayed the fuck away from their kindergartner's homework.
Note: based on a popular book of the same name - author and his wife also wrote the script - author responsible for book/movie A Dog's Purpose too (another shameless tug on dog owners' walle...er, hearts).

WHAT'S THE DEAL
Whelp, it's Keanu Reeves doin his weird movie thing again. Ok "weird" may not be the best descriptor, or fair. It's just that for a guy who's one of the more well known Hollywood stars, he's been in a lot of stinkers - at least critically. But for every few Knock Knock's, he manages to stick in some gems (see: John Wick series).
But maybe Reeves likes to try new things. Can you remember the last time he played a scientist who steals government tech to revive his wife (Alice Eve) and kids who died in a car accident, which causes an ethical and physical shitstorm? No you can not. Sure, maybe it's not exactly the freshest idea or execution, but maybe it's new to him. And it's his life, so just like, lay off, will ya? Jeezus.
But it's your life too, and you get to decide if you want to spend two hours with this one. We're not sayin' you'll wanna die in a car accident if you see it, but if we had to bet, it's more likely you'll be scrolling the iTunes "Viewers Also Watched" section in 5 years saying "when the hell did Keanu Reeves make that movie?" than seeing it on a bunch of year end favorite lists. /shrug But hey, Reeves has said Bill and Ted 3 is happening sooooo. #kindarelatedkindanotrelated

None yet, but if you hadn't gathered, we're not too hopeful this is anything more than a harmless diversion for two hours.

WHAT'S THE DEAL
Ah, "based on a true story." The favorite phrase of a Hollywood movie marketer. So ambiguous, and yet so powerful. It allows the viewer to believe, however limited, that some of what happened, actually happened.
Because a white paraplegic billionaire hiring a black "ex-con" caretaker who become best friends is something we want to believe can happen so badly, who cares how many stereotypes or clichés are used to make it so? Plus, it's based on a true story. Who can argue? Well, you can if you want to. But in defense The Upside will throw the charm of Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston (with a dash of stern, but sweet Nicole Kidman tossed in) and that's not nuthin. Plus! It's a remake of a French movie The Intouchables which made tons of money and became ridiculously popular across the world (just not in the US, hence the remake).
So enjoy your true story if you'd like, you'll probably get some smiles and heart pings along the way. But remember the lesson we've learned over the last few years, "truth" might just be different from one person to the next.

GLASS
The fragile one gets his own movie - kinda. He can't do it without Mr. David Dunn from Unbreakable and The Beast from Split. That is to say, this is the end of a trilogy that maybe or maybe wasn't always supposed to be one? Unsure. Early reviews are coming out and they're not too kind. No matter, this one is still likely to make bank.

Think BIG (as in the movie) reversed. Regina Hall is a powerful, but nasty boss who gets body swapped into her 13 year old body (played by youngest daughter from Black-ish). Only one who knows is her assistant, Issa Rae (HBO's Insecure). Looks pretty funny.
