WHAT'S THE DEAL
You know this is is a horror movie, because we're telling you it is a horror movie. Except it doesn't look like a horror movie. The sun is shining the entire movie. Horror movies are dark and shadowy. No way this is a horror. And yet. Ok, sure, it's made by the director of last year's incredibly messed up and dread inducing Hereditary, but this takes place in Sweden, during a summer festival, and all the Swedes are smiling. You think, certainly this can't be a horror movie.
This is a horror movie.
Because while most horror movies trick you with loud music and the in your face surprise of a creepy creature, this horror movie looks to create its sense of foreboding with grief, loss, loneliness and false empathy. The latter of which is responsible for Christian (Jack Reynor) inviting his girlfriend, with whom he was about to breakup, Dani (Florence Pugh) on a trip - mostly because she recently experienced something terrible. But since this is a horror movie, this doesn't ease troubles, this is the troubles. The Pagan festival they attend and approach first with awe will not bring them closer together and give them a happy ending. It will get dark, even while the sun stays bright. Because remember, this is a horror movie.
NOTE: the read from most reviewers is that the run time feels way faster than it actually is (in a good way).
REVIEWS
Not quite as beloved as Hereditary, but still very well liked and being lauded for Florence Pugh's performance as well as the effort into trying something fresh.
"Aster's control is startling: With diabolical suggestiveness he keeps widening the chasm between Dani and Christian, placing visual and emotional space between two people whose souls have long since drifted apart." - Peter Chang, LA Times

For: you don't just like new horror movies, you like new ideas in horror movies
(Not): you need a bad girl/guy with quips and unique ways of killing people for it to be a "true" horror movie

CRAWL
It's kinda like The Meg (the huge shark movie) with alligators, but more tight quarters suspense / horror then big action.
STUBER
The quintessential odd pairing modern action comedy - Drax, er, Dave Batista is a cop and Kumail Nanjiani is his Uber driver named Stu (get it?).
LIMITED RELEASE SPOTLIGHT
THE FAREWELL
Awkwafina is the focus of a Chinese + American family whose grandmother is dying, except she doesn't know that. Reviews are currently 100% on RT, so yeah, it's prolly quite rad.

THE ART OF SELF DEFENSE
Dark comedy where, surprisingly, learning how to commit violence doesn't seem to solve fear of violence. Jesse Eisenberg plays the trepidatious fellow dealing with issues of masculinity who starts to idolize his quirky teacher. Reviews are quite ardently positive.
HOBBS & SHAW
August 2, 2019
Final trailer. It's kind of bonkers they did another trailer since the last one was 3+ minutes and showed what seemed like every scene. Turns out, it was just nearly every scene.

Shia LaBeouf is a small time criminal who befriends a man with down syndrome who has ran away from home to join a wrestling school. Dakota Johnson is out looking for him. Looks pretty adorable. Reviews are good too.

CHARLIE'S ANGELS
November 15, 2019
Yup, a reboot. This time Elizabeth Banks writes and directs (and stars as Bosley) with Kristen Stewart leading a new crew of angels. Definitely 2019, but with still keeping the core goofy fun of the show/previous movie.

KNIVES OUT
November 27, 2019
This cast is kind of insane. But makes sense since it's Rian Johnson's next movie (Stars Wars: The Last Jedi, Looper, Brick). It's a whodunit, but you imagine (hope?) it's a little bit different than the rest. Daniel Craig is the lead detective with help from Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta) who investigate the death of the patriarch of a very genetically blessed family.

SPIES IN DISGUISE
December 24, 2019
Second trailer. Will Smith is a spy, Tom Holland (the current Spider-man) is his tech nerd. Will Smith becomes a... pigeon? So Holland has to take over. Makes sense. NOTE: moved from September 13th to Christmas.
