Soooo.... this is different.

this is the war room!"
You might've been wondering if you'd be getting a What's In Theaters email this week since there's literally nothing in theaters - all the major chains have closed due to gathering restrictions. AMC, the country's biggest theater chain, said they'd be closed "six to twelve weeks." ...yeah. Most studios have shifted everything through May, but in a pretty cool move by Universal, their movies already in theaters (The Hunt, Invisible Man, Emma.) and their upcoming Trolls: World Tour will be available for rental via VOD this Friday and April 10th respectively.
With all that said, yup, I'm still here (yay?) and during these *ahem* dark weeks in movie theaters, I want to try something I've been thinking about doing for a bit - a Does It Hold Up? viewing series. Sort of like a book club, but for old movies!
This week I'll just pick a flick, but for future weeks I'd love your suggestions of either a) older movies you might never have seen, but are still talked about as "good movies" and you want to see what all the hubbub is about (e.g. watched Psycho for the first time (I know, I know) recently and holy hell does it hold up) or b) a movie you remember liking a lot, but it's been yeeears (decades?) since you've seen it and you're kinda like "would it hold up tho? dunno."
So if you have ideas, either respond to this email or submit via this Google Form.
For this week, I settled on a movie I've never watched, but always been curious about - in part because of it's kinda goofy and oh so fitting title for them here times. And nooo it's not Contagion or 12 Monkeys. Newp, I'm going with the 1963 comedy It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World. Forewarning: it's kinda long (but you got the time, right)?
You can either watch the trailer (or go in completely blind!); it's on Amazon Prime or available to rent from any of the legit services (iTunes, YouTube etc.). I'll ask everyone who watched what they thought and then BAM, the universe will know if this damn movie is still good, or not.
If this isn't your bag (totally get it), and I'm sure you're not lacking for content, but wanted to suggest Kanopy, which gets a good amount of quality movies you can watch for free with a public library card (save that $$$). The New York Times also curated a great guide for stuff to watch.
I miiiiight have some other ideas to keep you (mildly) entertained during later weeks, but we'll see what the future holds. Until then, stay safe, stay (hand) hydrated, and get some exercise!
