Some guy who fell asleep during Vin Diesel's Bloodshot.
GUESS THE QUOTE
"Watch and you'll seeeeee,
someday I'll beeeeeee,
part of yooooour wooooooorld."
Hi.
How are you?
I'm well.
Hope you are too.
If you think I'm just tryin to fill up space with this introduction, I'd say how dare you... be so annoyingly pessimistically correct. But turn off that defeatist part of your brain for a second, we don't need it here. This is the land of movies, where dreams are formed and happiness reigns... ok, look, fuck it, who am I kidding? We just watched a "serio-comedy" where entirely one half of the human race acts like despicable disgusting turd nuggets, someone is sexually assaulted and the leads driving off a cliff is considered a happy ending.
If you're just catching up, yes, I'm talking about Thelma & Louise. And yes, I'm being overly dramatic for effect.
But really the movie is more disturbing than I remember (maybe I just thought I had watched the whole movie?), for how awful the men are in it - including "scene stealer" Brad Pitt, who is still just as slimy as the rest of them (but that butt though?!). And in a frustrating aspect of how it most certainly holds up is the fact dudes today act in large part... the same? Yes, things are better, but nearly thirty years on, definitely not enough. Thelma's realization ("I feel really awake. I don't recall ever feeling this awake.") certainly feels modern and the fact we still rarely see movies where women get legitimate arcs makes it even more prescient. In other aspects, the movie holds up because Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon are just damn fun to watch and real darn good actors.
What about you? Did you watch? Did you think it held up? Just hit reply and let me know!
Btw, if you were curious about its backstory, I'd encourage you to read (advice: scan) this admittedly entirely too long 2012 Vanity Fair profile on the movie where you learn: how the scriptwriter came upon her idea, that all the men are indeed supposed to be creeps, it almost wasn't Davis, Sarandon or Pitt in the key roles and that *shock* many male directors passed because of its content. And then if you're still curious, watch this funny (awkward?) video about Pitt getting "reinforcements" whilst filming his sex scene.
This Week's Does It Hold Up? Entry
In a bit of a surprise turn, Midnight Run gets this week's honors (Alien came in in a close second). So in this completely arbitrary, and I have no idea how activity participated in activity, you are now to watch another road movie; this time starring the odd couple of Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin. But who am I, your goddamn dad? Damn right I'm not! So go watch whatever the hell you wanna! And get off my lawn! ...ahem, don't know why I got so heated there. But if you do happen to watch Midnight Run, please be so kind as to let me know what you think, would you? 🥺🙏
NOTE: this theater closure thing doesn't look to be ending anytime soon, so we still need new Does It Hold Up? options - i.e. KEEP SUBMITTING ideas!

Cutoff? Go here, click "most recent edition."
From left to right (or top to bottom):
*click image to watch the trailer*
Good Will Hunting: the one movie I don't want to tell people I haven't seen cuz they always go... *repeat what you just said in your head*
Ghost World: the comic book, er graphic novel, based movie about two friends who are too cool.
Weird Science: "classic" John Hughes 80's flick I'm slightly afraid to re-watch cuz I'm not sure it will hold up.
The Birds: mentioned I hadn't seen Psycho until recently, so might as well check out some more Hitchcock eh?
