Woman who still can't find her seat. "It's so darn dark in here..."

"Welcome to Heaven motherfuckers."
In this week's edition of weird Hollywood goings on, we've less bickering Hollywood execs and more Elon Musk / Tom Cruise talking about filming a movie... in space? I mean, of course. And sure, fuck it, why not. I'm in. Plus, start making that movie right quick and you'll be able to post the best quarantine humblebrag ever on your Insta - "OMG guys. I'm in space right now. Can you believe it?? I guess I'm doing the whole #socialdistancing thing right huh? 😉#theRona #ICanSeeMyHouseFromHere #BecauseImTomCruiseAndMyHouseIsFNGinormous #SpaceX #ad
Btw, I'm still unsure if everyone is aware of the voting system for this whole Does It Hold Up? series, so for those of you that are confused or just hate scrolling, Imma place this pretty little link to VOTE RIGHT HERE .
This week's options could best be described as "Animated Movies That'll Prove Animated Movies Aren't Only For Kids." Long title. Fitting title. So go ahead, be a good WIT citizen, and vote! Note: you will not get an I voted sticker, but you will get my love. 🥰
Does It Hold Up? Week 7: Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
I mean, the opening line portended violence, and violence we were given. Nothing egregious mind you, as that word is best held to describe the lead trio's outfits. Or were they purposeful? To be honest, I can't say I know for certain, so I'd go with the cop out of "both."
But what I do know for certain is I enjoyed the hell out of the movie. That's not to say everyone will, or even most people. But for my co-watchers and me, it's understandable why it has a following 50+ years after its release. The amount of quotable lines should be enough, but add to that the cultural norms it played around with (still kinda is). Plus, the story, while ridiculous, was more cohesive than I thought it'd be. So yeah, I think it holds up plenty.
What about you? You watch it? Thoughts?

LOVE & BASKETBALL
(2000)
PG-13 / 2 hrs 4 mins
New Line / RT: 83% (92 reviews)
Your winner this week! It might be easy to pass this off as "just another romance," but if you made a movie and, as a certain famously bearded fellow liked to say, a score later there were multiple thought pieces written in honor of the milestone, from the likes of ESPN, EW, BET, and The Ringer, it'd fair of you to think "ya know, I did some shit right."
And by all accounts, Gina Prince-Bythewood, the writer and director of L & B, did some shit right. Not least of which was making a movie with black leads (Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan) in a traditionally "Hollywood type movie," which shouldn't be a big deal (but it was, and it is) and by taking a female's athletic aspirations seriously (because they were mostly absent from cinema, and largely still are -Prince-Bythewood was a serious athlete herself). But while those are obviously important (and impactful) aspects, you still have to make a good movie. Especially if a movie is to say, "hold up."
So with all that said, I've never actually seen the damn thing, so I'm kinda excited to see how the whole "frenemies as kids" to "lovers as teens and beyond" plays out, and if the proverbial up is still being held.
The Others: in case you preferred one of the alternate options, they were: Little Miss Sunshine, The Virgin Suicides & Winter's Bone.
WATERSHIP DOWN
(1978)
You might think a movie based on a children's book about rabbits and their warrens would have to be all cuddly and adorable. But oooh Kelly Clarkson would you be wrong. If you've never seen it, get ready for fields of blood, savage attacks and intricate mythology. Ok then! Whenever someone says animated movies are "only for kids," I think this should be a candidate to prove otherwise. See, I never finished the book as a kid (it was/is 600 pages), but I remember the movie being absolutely bonkers. I'm pretty sure it's still bonkers, but less sure if it holds up (though I hope so!).
THE DARK CRYSTAL
(1982)
Pretty sure there was a point in my life I had memories of this movie and couldn't remember if it was a real thing or just shit I made up because I was like "this is way too weird to be true." But Jim Henson I am not and real this awesomely weird adventure is. There's even a Netflix prequel series which came out last year; so surely the OG holds up, right?
THE SECRET OF NIMH
(1982)
I did finish the book this movie was based on (only 233 pages though 🙃). And while I never forgot if the darn thing existed, my brain has relegated many of the details to the room that says "to be deleted." So I'm kind of excited at the prospect of re-watching Mrs. Frisby the mouse try and save her son and discover the oddity that is the world of NIMH. I just hope it... ya know.
THE IRON GIANT
(1999)
Feel like this is a strong lock for holding up, especially since it was kinda treated as if it had BO at the ol' B.O., but has since gone on to be regarded as a "modern classic." Plus, it was the world's big introduction to Brad Bird, who would go on to direct The Incredibles 1/2, Ratatouille, and a Mission: Impossible movie. But assuming it holds up two decades later, doesn't mean you can say it does. So how bout it, huh?
